Kurinuki cup, Dark Brown

Thrown on the wheel and then cut by hand, the facets work their way around the body in broad flat planes, each one catching the light at a slightly different angle. The upper half and interior are finished with a transparent glaze that lets the dark clay speak for itself. The lower half is left completely raw: unglazed stoneware, cool and slightly rough to the touch, the cuts sharp and unhidden.

The technique is inspired by kurinuki, the Japanese tradition of carving a shape from a solid block of clay. There's something in that approach, the idea that the material already contains the object, that felt worth exploring, but still keeping true to myself and throwing it on the wheel.

This is a one-off. The faceting is done by hand and no two will ever sit quite the same way in the light.
